It’s the world’s smallest desert! This quirky and unexpected landscape is a testament to the diversity of our planet’s ecosystems. Originally known as “Caribou Crossing” due to the migration of woodland caribou through the region, the Carcross Desert is only one square mile big. You can stroll across this sandy expanse, marvel at its unique flora and fauna, and perhaps even spot some remnants of its caribou-crossing past.

While it’s probably not the first place that comes to mind when you think of deserts, this frozen wonderland boasts vast stretches of ice and snow, receiving less than 8 inches of annual precipitation. The combination of low rainfall and extreme cold classifies it as the largest and coldest desert on Earth, and you can take it all in on the Scenic Eclipse II – a luxury Antarctica cruise. If you’re going to Chile – you can’t miss the experience of the renowned Atacama desert stargazing. Thanks to the desert’s high altitude, minimal light pollution, and dry climate, the Atacama offers some of the most spectacular stargazing opportunities on the planet. Here, the night sky transforms into a celestial canvas, glittering with countless stars that seem close enough to touch. But the epic desert adventures don’t end with stargazing! The land is home to many wonders. You can explore the otherworldly El Tatio Geysers, traverse the vast salt flats, or soak in the soothing hot springs of Termas de Puritama.
In Africa’s Namib Desert, the thrill of dune climbing reaches new heights…literally. The Namib Desert is home to some of the tallest sand dunes in the world, such as Dune 45 (+500 feet) and Big Daddy (+1,250 feet).
