If the vast expanse of desert in Peru and Morocco isn’t enticing, maybe you want to experience the Carcross Desert in Yukon, Canada. You heard that right! There is a desert in Canada. It’s the world’s smallest desert! This quirky and unexpected landscape is a testament to the diversity of our planet’s ecosystems. Originally known as “Caribou Crossing” due to the migration of woodland caribou through the region, the Carcross Desert is only one square mile big. You can stroll across this sandy expanse, marvel at its unique flora and fauna, and perhaps even spot some remnants of its caribou-crossing past.

It might surprise you that the world’s largest (and coldest) desert is in Antarctica; it surprised me! While it’s probably not the first place that comes to mind when you think of deserts, this frozen wonderland boasts vast stretches of ice and snow, receiving less than 8 inches of annual precipitation. The trek to the top of these dunes is challenging, but the views are well worth it! But don’t worry even if your legs are too tired from adventure after trekking the dunes, there are plenty of other ways to explore the desert. Namibia bike tours offer quad bikes to traverse the dunes, or you can get a birds-eye view of the desert on a scenic flight. The Skeleton Coast is a particularly popular place to see by plane, as you can see the entirety of the shipwrecks from above.
