SLEEPING CLIFFSIDE AT SKY LODGE PERU

For years, I’ve been hunting for the most unique and unforgettable hotels in the world—places that offer more than just a comfortable bed and a pretty view. I’m talking about destinations that deliver extreme thrills and unmatched experiences. Skylodge Adventure Suites is a cliffside hotel in Peru that offers an adrenaline-fueled adventure suspended in the sky!

Skylodge is the world’s first hanging shelter. The hotel’s transparent pods are perched in the mountains of Ollantaytambo, a town in Peru’s Sacred Valley, suspended 1,200 feet above the valley floor. The only way to reach these extraordinary rooms is by conquering the Via Ferrata, a climbing route that combines hiking and rock climbing with jaw-dropping views.

Overview: The Itinerary At Sky Lodge Adventure Suites

Sky Lodge Peru promises an action-packed schedule from a rock climbing arrival to a ziplining departure. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Transportation: Private transport to and from the starting point, with hassle-free airport transfer services from Cusco or nearby airports.
  • Safety Briefing: Before your climb, the crew provides a comprehensive safety briefing.
  • Via Ferrata Climb: Ascend via the Via Ferrata, a climbing route with cables and rungs, taking about 1.5 to 2 hours. The reward? A breathtaking sunset view from the clifftop.
  • Gourmet Dinner: You will enjoy a four-course dinner with wine in a separate dining dome. The menu features a variety of Peruvian dishes crafted from fresh, local ingredients.
  • Overnight Capsule Stay: Sleep in a transparent capsule, offering panoramic views.
  • Breakfast: Wake to another spectacular view and enjoy breakfast in the dining dome before descending via zipline.
  • Photo Options: Hire a photographer or drone services to capture your epic stay.

Arrival and Check-In

We left Machu Picchu that morning feeling like total explorers, but Skylodge Adventure Suites took things to a new level.

Instead of a traditional check-in, the adventure suites experience involved scaling the Via Ferrata. This thrilling route required a mix of hiking and rock climbing that kept our hearts racing and our spirits high.

We had to unclip from one section every few feet and clip onto the next. The view from the cliff’s edge was thrilling and daunting, but the ascent was incredibly rewarding despite the challenges.

I did the whole climb with my mom, which was so much fun!

Halfway up this epic climb, we came to a suspension bridge offering stunning views of the valley. The sight of our progress motivated us to push through to the top.

The climb seemed never-ending, but after two hours, the hotel’s pods came into view. We were exhausted and pumped to have reached our room in the sky just as the sun was setting. Watching the sun’s colors paint the valley from our cliffside perch was a sight we will never forget. The fear of heights faded away, replaced by an out-of-this-world feeling of accomplishment.

Sleeping in Transparent Pods: A Night Above the Sacred Valley

Our home for the night was a transparent pod suspended 1,200 feet above the valley floor. The adventure suites offer panoramic views of the Sacred Valley. The sense of being high above the ground is exhilarating, and the serenity of the mountain air adds a layer of tranquility to the experience. As night falls, another beautiful scene is revealed  – the starlit sky.

Despite the extreme location, the inside of the pod was unexpectedly cozy and roomy. We stayed in one of the two twin-bed configurations. There’s also a queen-bed option for couples looking to share a bed. The pods even come with curtains for privacy, though who would want to block out that view?

The bathroom situation resembles fancy camping, with a fantastic view to match. It’s clean and well-maintained but definitely on the smaller side—after all, you are staying in a pod suspended off a cliff!

It’s worth noting that there are no electrical outlets in the pod. While you won’t be charging your phone or using electronics, the stunning view makes it worth it. Walkie-talkies are provided for communication with the guides if needed.

The Wake-Up!

Waking up in a Skylodge capsule is an unforgettable experience. After all, you rarely wake up in a hotel on a cliff in Peru. Opening your eyes to a 1,200-foot drop down the mountainside is both exhilarating and awe-inspiring. The morning light casting a soft glow over the Sacred Valley makes it feel like you’ve awakened in a dream.

Dining in Skylodge Style!

The food at Skylodge is nearly as incredible as the view.

Here’s the lowdown: After that climb, you deserve a reward. Skylodge provides a four-course feast fit for royalty in a separate dining dome. You will enjoy steaming soups, crisp salads, flavorful main courses, decadent desserts, and wine—all while surrounded by breathtaking views of the valley.

You’ll head to the dining dome for breakfast to fuel up for ziplining with a spread of coffee, eggs, toast, granola, and fresh fruit.

Skylodge also offers a unique twist on room service. Meals are planned ahead and carried up the mountain by guides in their backpacks. This allows you to savor breakfast in bed, enjoy a romantic dinner, or indulge in a late-night snack in your cozy capsule.

The Descent Via Ziplines

After a short and scenic 15-minute hike down the mountain, you’ll experience the thrill of zipping through the Sacred Valley. Skylodge features six high-speed ziplines, including one epic stretch over 2,600 feet long. Glide high above a river, surrounded by lush green fields and dramatic mountainous terrain, as you spot local spots like Urubamba, Cusco, and more in the distance.
