Where to Stay
A cruise is the best way to explore Alaska, offering incredible glacier views along the way. When I visited Alaska, I sailed with Norwegian Cruise Line, which was an incredible experience. Of course, there are many other cruise lines available.
Book your Alaska trip with Adventures By Sky, and I’ll help you pick the best cruise line for your particular needs. Plus, you’ll unlock exclusive perks when you book with me.
Determining the best time to visit the wild state depends on the types of activities on your Alaska Bucket List. Below, I’ve listed the best seasons based on your priorities, whether filling Summer’s extra daylight with more adrenaline-filled adventures or enjoying the solitude of the off-peak months.
Summer (June-August) is the best time to visit for warmer temperatures, wildlife viewing, and outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and whale watching. If you visit in Summer, you’ll also experience the local phenomenon of the “midnight sun,” which refers to the fact that the sun is often still lighting your adventures at midnight.
Fall (September) is a quieter time to visit. The fall foliage is on full display, and it’s also an excellent time for salmon fishing and seeing the northern lights.
Winter (November-March) is ideal for snow sports such as skiing, dog sledding, and viewing the northern lights. If you’re anti-crowd, this is a great time to go.
Spring (April-May) is a transition period when snow begins to melt, wildlife begins to emerge, and temperatures start warming up. It’s another peaceful time to visit with fewer tourists.
Alaska Travel Tips
Time Zone: Alaska is in the Alaska Time Zone (AKT).
Currency: The local currency is U.S. dollars. Most places accept credit cards, but I recommend carrying cash, especially when exploring remote areas.
Health and Safety: Be prepared for outdoor adventures by bringing a first aid kit, insect repellent, sunscreen, and any personal medications.
Pack for the Weather: Alaska’s weather can be unpredictable—pack layers for warmth, rain gear, and sturdy footwear for outdoor activities.
Plan for Wildlife Viewing: Alaska is known for its abundant wildlife. While you can never guarantee a wildlife sighting, you can set yourself up for the highest chance of seeing wildlife by working with experienced guides and planning in advance.
Time Your Visit to Avoid the Crowds: To avoid large crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (the seasons between peak and off-peak). In Alaska, the shoulder seasons are Spring (April-May) and Fall (September).
Prepare for Long Days (or Nights): During the summer, daylight hours can stretch incredibly long, especially in areas like Fairbanks, where the sun barely sets. Bring an eye mask if you’re sensitive to light. Conversely, winter days can be short, so plan outdoor activities accordingly.
Stay Hydrated and Protect Your Skin: The Alaskan sun can be harsh, even in cooler weather. Be sure to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and protect your skin from the elements, which can be particularly strong in coastal areas.
Be Ready for Changing Weather: The weather in Alaska can change rapidly. Always check the forecast for the region you’ll be in, but pack for all conditions—rain, sun, or snow. Packing layers is the key to being prepared and staying comfortable.
